In 1981, she helmed the drama film Salome, which was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. After a short-term retirement, she returned with the multi-awarded 2001 family drama Tanging Yaman and another drama film, Santa Santita, in 2004, which represented her home country at the Bangkok International Film Festival.
Guillen served as Chief Executive Officer of the Film Development Council of the Philippines until 2005 and helped found the Directors Guild of the Philippines.
